Have you ever taken a selfie? Come on, it’s ok. We all have! While taking a selfie can be a little embarrassing to admit, learning the art of selfies in marketing can actually increase interaction with your brand.

In the age of the selfie, marketers are forced to make the difficult decision of whether they should hold out their phones and smile or stick to traditional imagery. In a SurveyMonkey selfie survey (say that 3 times fast), SurveyMonkey asked more than 400 of people in the SurveyMonkey Audience about their thoughts and feelings on the selfie – and the results may make marketers capture their next lunch meeting.
While 74% of the people surveyed said that they did not consider purchasing something because the ad included a selfie, 40% said selfies in marketing were a somewhat effective tactic. 40% is certainly not something to sneeze at when you’re trying to sell a product or service!
So what does this mean for the art of marketing the selfie? Well, of the people that were surveyed, 40% said that they take selfies for fun and 38.1% said they take them to share a special moment.

Where does that leave us? The human connection – which is now one of the top ways marketers are trying to relate to their audience, so selfies in marketing do have a place in today’s world!
In a SlideShare post by Havas Worldwide, Hashtag Nation: Marketing to the Selfie Generation, they address how young people are an influential group to market to, but note, “Talking to you people is no longer about values; it’s about engagement and utility.”
After digesting that, maybe looking at selfies really is the easier way to take in content!
The point is, that for the marketers who want to use selfies in marketing, MarketingProfs offers up 7 tips to help you go about leveraging the selfie age. My favorite, and what I think is the most important, is “Promote your business’s human side.” Being able to see the faces of the people you work with and what kind of things they are interested in offers a deeper connection that audiences are reaching for.
All selfies included in this blog are real and one of a kind. (Here at Bluewater we’re real humans, not robots.) Enjoy!
