Hey everyone and welcome back to This Week in Marketing! This week we are going to look at McDonald’s unique idea for the World Cup, Coca-Cola’s first user-generated TV ad and a look at Social Media Day.
McDonald’s Virtual Soccer Fields
Our first story for this week in marketing looks at the monumental change at McDonald’s. For the first time beginning May 26th, McDonald’s will be changing the design of their medium fry boxes globally as a part of their new promotion for the World Cup. The 12 new designs, produced by artists around the world, will allow you to play their new app called “McDonald’s Gol.”
The app turns the box into a virtual soccer field where the player tries to flick a soccer ball on the screen into the goal. The goal will actually be your McDonald’s box of fries. Players must dodge “real–world objects” in order to score the goals in the game. Following the game, players have the ability to share their scores via social media.
Coca-Cola’s First User-Generated TV Ad
Just a few months ago Coca-Cola announced a contest inviting consumers to put together their very own commercial. After receiving nearly 400 submissions, the first user-generated ad has been put together, using clips from all over the world – from Brazil to Salt Lake City!
The title of the commercial is “This is AHH,” which is supposed to resemble what a sip of Coke feels like. After making its debut during the finale of American Idol Wednesday night, the commercial will air throughout the week on networks such as The CW, MTV, and Adult Swim.
Social Media Day
Our final story this week in marketing looks at the growing popularity of Social Media Day. Each and every day millions of people access a social media platform to engage with friends, family and coworkers, and these platforms are constantly evolving and more people are finding even more interesting ways to interact with one another.
Mashable has announced that the fifth annual Social Media Day is returning on June 30th, 2014. After being introduced in 2010 by Mashable as a way to celebrate social media platforms and their users, the day now has worldwide reach. Some of the most highly attended events were hosted in Australia, Costa Rica, and the United States.
Mashable invites people everywhere to attend, or even host their own “Social Media Day Meetup.” You can find more information on meetups in your area or how to throw your own Social Media Meetup by following @MashableEvents on Twitter or by joining the Mashable Meetup Organizers group on Facebook!
